AMERICAN TAEKWONDO ASSOCIATION

Tae Kwon Do, which usually translates to " the way of the foot and the fist," is an martial arts style that originated in Korea.

Axon Martial Arts Academy is part of the American Taekwondo Association, ATA.

The ATA was founded  in 1969 by Grandemaster H. U. Lee, who was invited to the United States by a student who had been stationed at the Air Force base near his dojang.

Members of the ATA practice Songham Tae Kwon Do, a curriculum whose core consists of poom-sae or forms. A form is a series of planned movements . Grandmaster H. U. Lee created these Songahm forms to better embody the strength and beauty of Tae Kwon Do.

Today, the ATA is the largest martial arts organization in the world. One of the reasons of its reach and success is the spirit exhibited by Eternal Grandmaster H. U. Lee when he chose to use traditional Tae Kwon Do techniques to create new forms: to remain in the tradition while adapting to what needs to be changed.

Over the years, the ATA has made progress by adapting to new knowledge in the worlds of martial arts, fitness, and business without forgoing the fundamentals of its tradition. It now has a solid curriculum for weapons, extreme martial arts as well as fitness and life-skills programs.

THE MEANING OF

SONGAHM

"Songahm" means pine tree and rock. Pine trees that grow out of the harsh environment of rock cliffs are a testament to their strength and resilience.

The term Songahm represents an "evergreen strength the year round, long life and a symbol of unchanging human loyalty."

H. U. Lee created 18 Songahm forms, one for each of the 9 color belts and 9 black belts.

By learning these forms, Songahm students acquire the necessary techniques that are built on what has been done before. This process allows students to improve in a systematic progression, with each technique used in multiple contexts and combinations. When a student has mastered the 9 color-belt forms, they are well-prepared to test for their Black Belt.

Martial arts technique is only one part of what students learn at the Tae Kwon Do dojang. They are also constantly learning what it means to persevere, to get back up after failing, to learn to handle successes, to be confident as well as humble, to take care of themselves as well as to be courteous to others.

What can you expect at
Axon Martial Arts Academy?

Every martial arts training facility has its own priorities and culture. These are the guiding principles at Axon Martial Arts.

01

Individual Attention

Every student is treated as an individual and accorded with respect. Axon Academy will remain at a size that allows the owner, Yat-Yee Chong, to know and teach every student.

02

Person First

The student is always more important than skills or curriculum. Students should expect to be challenged but never at the expense of their personal development and well-being.

03

Emphasis on Teaching

Being proficient in marital arts skills is necessary but not enough for someone to be a martial arts instructor. Ms. Chong brings with her 30 years of teaching experience and a Master's degree in pedagogy to teaching Tae Kwon Do.

04

Always Learning

The Founder of ATA, Eternal Grandmaster H. U. Lee has this simple motto: "There is always more to learn." This characterizes the attitude of the academy for students and instructors.

05

Inclusive and Positive

The only people excluded at Axon Martial Arts Academy are those who seek to exclude others. This is a community that accepts, supports, and encourages.

Meet Owner and Head Instructor, Yat-Yee Chong

When my children’s martial arts instructor first invited me to train, I laughed.

You see, my identity was that of a book-worm, a music nerd. Even though I grew up a fan of martial arts films, I thought learning martial arts was only for the gifted.

My instructor persisted, and I eventually took the leap.

It was one of my best decisions.

It awakened the athlete in me. It proved that I could develop my athletic skills even in my 40s.

It allowed me to train alongside my children, gifting me with many shared lifelong memories.

I want to share what Tae Kwon Do has done for my family with you. Schedule a free exploratory sessions to see if Axon Academy is a good fit for your family.
